CENTRAL VIRGINIA ASA HALL OF FAME, INC.

Purpose

Our Purpose is to honor those men and women who have played a major role in the growth and development of softball, one of the great sports of the United States. Also, to bring to the attention of the public, the widespread value of, and interest in the game of softball by so honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to its success. To this end, the Central Virginia ASA Hall of Fame, Inc. will endeavor:

  • TO HONOR those who by outstanding achievement or service to softball in Central Virginia ASA/USA have reflected honor and glory.
  • TO PRESERVE records of teams and individuals who deserve to be included in our Association’s sports history.
  • TO MAINTAIN the high ideals and traditions of softball as a positive influence for others and a factor in our American way of life which adds to the quality of life for all area citizens.
  • TO ENCOURAGE softball participation on a broad basis and on a high plane of sportsmanship, under competent leadership to provide for active lifestyles.
  • TO INSPIRE others to be physically fit and to strive for the greatest achievement within the bounds of their physical and mental endowment.

Nomination Requirements

1. Categories

A. Players
  • Selection: To be selected for the Central Virginia ASA Hall of Fame, Inc., a person must have been an active player within the Association’s boundaries. The player must have demonstrated a high level of sportsmanship and comradeship throughout their softball career.
  • Evaluation: The length of playing time is to be considered as a factor in the evaluation of candidates. Fame at the State and National level shall be used as a gauge for candidacy; however, a player must have earned the esteem of area softball officials and residents through years of participation. Factual and detailed information must be presented to the Hall of Fame Committee before a candidate can be accepted. Scrapbooks and newspaper clippings are acceptable; also letters from competent references and verification of participation is required. If possible letters should be provided from the manager of his/her former and existing team(s) and existing Hall of Fame members. To be eligible for selection to the Hall of Fame in the player category, participation at the highest divisions shall be considered. Five (5) copies of the candidate’s nomination package in booklet form shall be provided to the Hall of Fame Committee as detailed on the nomination form.
  • Prerequisites: A player must be either retired Five (5) years from softball or have reached the age of Forty-Five (45) and must have been a stand-out performer and been considered by his/her peers as one of the top players in the area. League and tournament averages and statistics plus number of times competing in local, State and National tournaments shall be used. Any special recognition at a tournament shall be considered, such as leading hitter, defensive leader, home run leader or MVP.
B. Managers

To be selected, a person must have managed for Ten (10) years for teams who participated in leagues within the Association and won a minimum of Four (4) league championships. The person must have been active in the promotion and development of softball in Central Virginia ASA/USA. Managers will also be considered who have demonstrated success in tournament play over a number of years.

C. Sponsors

To be selected, a sponsor must have sponsored team(s) for a minimum of Ten (10) years, in local leagues and/or tournaments.

D. Commissioners/Directors

To be selected, a person must have been a commissioner or other league official for Ten (10) years. In addition, to qualify for this award, the nominee shall have served in some of the following areas:

  • Regional Qualifying Tournament
  • Chair or vice-chair of a national committee
  • Host of national and/or regional tournaments
  • Director of local tournaments and softball events
  • Special recognition received and/or other services which greatly added to the quality of life for county residents.
E. Meritorious Service

This category could include any combination of the above listed categories (a, b, c, d) also, an organizer-builder, years of service, financial contributor, etc. with a dedicated commitment to the game including participation at any level of play. Note: Players and managers who participated on teams in their division of play and who have a remarkable record of local involvement and promotion of the game can be considered in this category.

F. Masters and Seniors

This category is for those players over the age of Fifty-Five (55) who have been a standout performer in the Masters and/or Senior Divisions of softball and been considered by his/her peers as one of the top players in the area in the older division of our sport. Success in National competition at the higher skill levels will be used as a gauge in selecting worthy candidates.

G. Umpires

To be selected, an umpire must have umpired for at least Ten (10) years in Central Virginia ASA/USA and developed a “hall-of-fame” reputation. Selection is not based on longevity but a career of promoting and enhancing softball in the area.

H. Teams

The Hall of Fame Committee may select teams that have demonstrated such success

2. Number to be selected

No more than Six (6) candidates may be selected to the Hall of Fame in One (1) year, unless there is a tie for the 6th place, and then all candidates tied for 6th place will be inducted into the Hall of Fame that year”.

3. Deadline

Candidates must be submitted to the Hall of Fame Committee on or before June 30th of the current year. The candidate’s nomination package will be on file and the candidate considered for the Hall of Fame for a period of Five (5) years from the date submitted.

4. Nomination Forms

Nomination forms will be available from the Hall of Fame Program Booklet, the Hall of Fame Committee Members, from various league officials and the Central Virginia ASA Hall of Fame, Inc. website.

5. Evaluation of Candidates

Five (5) copies of factual and detailed information must be presented to the Hall of Fame Committee before a candidate can be accepted. Scrapbook information, newspaper clippings, letters from competent references and any other supporting data should be organized in booklet form for submittal to the Committee. Copies of the nomination form and resumes will be provided to all committee members in a timely manner prior to the voting meeting in September. A candidate can resubmit his nomination under another category if they so desire.

6. Selection

The names of the candidates for selection to the Hall of Fame shall remain confidential and released only to the Hall of Fame Committee. Voting shall be done by a written ballot. Any exception to the nomination requirements must be approved by a Two-Thirds (2/3) vote of the Committee.

To be accepted into the Hall of Fame the candidate must receive a majority of votes from the committee members present at the time of the voting. “No more than Six (6) Candidates may be selected to the Hall of Fame in One (1) year, unless there is a tie for the 6th place, and then all candidates tied for 6th place will be inducted into the Hall of Fame that year”.

Presentation

An announcement of the year’s selection shall be made on or about September 15th of the current year. Special stories may be sent to the local newspapers about the selectees.

Induction

Formal induction ceremonies and presentation of awards shall be made during an announced event during the current year. More than one induction ceremony may be held in any one year or the Committee could decide to skip a year.

Awards

A specially designed award shall be given to those elected to the Hall of Fame. In addition, each new member shall be included on a Hall of Fame plaque which will be prominently displayed and maintained by the Central Virginia ASA/USA.

Removal

The Hall of Fame Committee, by Three-Fourths (3/4) vote, may with just cause, recommend removal of an individual elected to the Hall of Fame. Such recommendations, when approved by the Central Virginia ASA/USA Commissioner, shall remove said individual from the Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame Committee

The hall of Fame committee will serve at the pleasure of the Central Virginia ASA/USA Commissioner and consist of a minimum of Ten (10) individuals to be selected from the Association and existing Hall of Fame Inductees. All new members must be approved by a majority vote of the Committee with the concurrence of the Central Virginia ASA/USA Commissioner. Committee members may be replaced for non-participation.
